Day 3 - Links Championship Round 2

And so to the second and final round of 'The Links Championship', played in conjunction with the Weston-Super-Mare Seniors Open.

70% of the group gathered on the first tee, eagerly awaiting the start

Slightly less wind and a bit easier course made for somewhat better scoring, the winner of the Open managed 40 pts... more like the kind of score you expect to see winning these events.

A view from the 5th tee, although not of the 5th hole... just some sand!
The scores and overall totals were -

Less than sharp photo,
I think the autofocus was confused by the colours

Congratulations to Mike Steward, the first winner of the prestigeous 'Links Championship' trophy.

Recorded for posterity

The plate says it all

There was one other 'prize' on offer over the two days of the competiton, but we were unable to get a picture of the trophy and it's 'winner' together!!

I'll leave you to work out who took this home!

Day 2 - A Break From The Wind

The second day was break from the pressures of 'The Links Championship' and the challenge of a south-westerly gale was replaced by the hills and trees of Wells GC.

The competition format for the day was Pairs Aggregate Stableford scores, with teams decided by points scored on day 1... 1st & 10th, 2nd & 9th etc.

Winning team was James Barnatt and a certain Dave Williams... well played gents.

The view from the 12th tee, back towards the green in front of the clubhouse.
Words escape me! But it is the only other pic from Wells.

A slight bit of post round intrigue... Richard goes to the locker room to change his shoes, only to find that some kind soul had 'borrowed' his nice new shoes and left an old pair in exchange!

Day 1 - 2016 Links Championship Round 1

Day 1 of the trip and round 1 of the 'championship' sees us assemble at Burnham & Berrow GC, for their Seniors Open, in time for our mid-day'ish tee times. The view from the clubhouse window didn't fill us with excitement... whilst it was bright enough, the horizontal rain didn't look too promising!

Fortunately the forecasters got it right for a change and the rain cleared before any of us tee'd off, however the wind persisted all day.

Burnham & Berrow 1st Tee
Must have been a practice swing? Surely he didn't play with those people so close... mind you, they are in the fairway so quite safe!
Clearly a staged pose? Bon coup, Monsieur.
Finally... some 'golfers' arrive at the first tee!
On the tee at the par 5 4th, James and Mike trying to work out where to aim to try and carry the crap.
As can be seen from the scores below... the course, or more specifically the wind, was the winner on the day! The Open winners score of only 35 points and a CSS of 75 (R/O) bear testament to how tough the conditions were.

Our scores -
HcpPts
John Alexander 13 27
Mike Steward 17 26
Dave Williams 16 26
Kevin Timms 18 22
Cliff Smith 20 20
Andy Wright 18 20
Richard Gent 22 19
James Barnatt 14 19
Alan Lake 19 18
Glyn Rees 22 18

The above has been written two months after the event (don't let the date at the top the post fool you), so you'll forgive me if the details are a bit thin on the ground.... memory of events later in the evening are even more sketchy! Suffice to say I think all had a pleasant evening in Weatherspoons (just across the road from our hotel... good fortune eh? Or good planning?).
The 10th man is behind the camera... thanks for the pics Glyn.
